the wild within us

Develop and define your true north

The Wild Within Us Workshop (WWUW) is a workshop built for the current or aspiring professional photographers who are looking to become more streamlined in their portrait work & business. At this workshop you can expect to be working with seasoned veterans of the industry. Our ambition is to setup an environment of professional development for the photographer who is already very comfortable with the technical side of shooting but wants to take their work & business to the next level. What we want to help you do is manage your time better, attain a better work-life balance, develop your website and money flow so that you become a more successful business person and grow your confidence as a self marketer. What we want you to take away from this workshop are the skills and confidence to set yourself apart from the rest, while still holding on to who YOU are and the fun and passion that drew you to photography.

Our TRUE NORTH defines us. It separates us from the rest.  It attracts the people we are suppose to attract.
It guides us in the directions we are meant to go. If we do not have an understanding about who we are and what we offer, how can we give our clients our best? How can we give off a sense of who we are and why we are different? Without a clear understanding of that, how can we know how to put our best foot forward, what to work towards, how to grow and learn, and what tools to use in order to get to where we want to go?

We want to help you identify your TRUE NORTH so we can help you ask yourself the right questions, get familiar with the right tools, and bring forth your style through styled shoots, recommend business management tools, and how to help your clients feel what you are trying to capture.

Get to your new friend, instructor and fellow photographer, kate.

With a combined total of 10 years of struggle, questions, fears, and uncertainty, we understand that sometimes, as entrepreneurs, you don’t even know where to start or what questions to ask. We created this workshop out of a deep desire to see people like us, like YOU, succeed in turning their passion into profit. The main purpose of this workshop is to help you develop and define your TRUE NORTH, We believe everything starts with knowing who you are or who you want to be . You have to know yourself, your product and your ideal client. This will help you build a specific brand that will in turn actually attract all those things you want. What sets you apart? What are you passionate about? Why do you love photographing people? What do you hope people FEEL when they look at the photos you take of them? These are just a few of the questions we will wrestle with during our time together and share from our own experiences how we came to define them and create lives & businesses we love.

"hey, y'all"

hello, i'm kate!

I have been teaching photography for 5 years now, shooting for over 10. I can honestly say that one of my greatest joys is sharing knowledge and creating an open community for growth rather than competition. As an educator and fellow lover of photography, I live for the those tangible “ah-ha” moments when the person I am teaching starts smiling from ear to ear, their eyes start to sparkle, their body language screams excitement and their energy permeates their surroundings. I am anxious to share those types of moments in the foundational business aspects of running a photography business as well as the client experience.  I can’t wait to watch YOU learn how to automate your business, streamline your workflows and be confident in who you are and what sets you apart. Let us help you find and define your True North.

Frequently asked questions

We are an inclusive group of creatives, ready to share our knowledge and can meet you where you are at in your photography journey. However, we want to make sure everyone shows up to the workshop with a basic understanding of how to use their cameras on manual and basic working knowledge of Lightroom. This will allow us to make the most out of time together. We also request positive attitudes, open hearts and the willingness to be vulnerable and welcome personal and business growth.

Required Equipment: Laptop, DSLR Camera, External Hard Drive, Minimum Two Batteries, Minimum two 32 GB memory cards and card reader. A recommended packing list will be provided upon booking.

YES! We are covering the cost of accommodation, all food, water and snacks during the workshop. Alcohol is not provided but you are welcome to bring whatever you would like. Flights, car rental or any travel to & from the Workshop is not included, however, we will add you to a private Facebook group after booking to encourage carpooling/splitting cost of transportation with other attendees.

There are a total of 10 spots available. We want to keep it small & intimate because we love having personal time with y’all! The mentor to attendee ratio is 1:5.

YES! We have one payment option. We require a 50% retainer upon booking and remaining balance is due 60 days before the start of the workshop. We accept payments online only and can be made by credit card, debit card, or bank transfer.

We all know that life doesn’t always honor the plans we make, however, due to non-refundable payments on housing and catering, the retainers we collect are non-refundable unless you are able to fill your spot. If you do need to cancel and you are able to fill your spot 30 days before the start of the workshop, you will receive a full refund minus a $300 administration fee. If you cancel within 30 days of the start of the workshop a full refund minus the administration fee must be conditionally approved based upon your replacement for your spot.

If for any reason we would need to cancel the workshop, you will receive a full refund.

Trip interruption and cancellation insurance:

We strongly recommend taking out trip interruption and cancellation insurance. There are many companies that provide trip interruption or cancellation insurance . We also recommend medical travel insurance, to ensure you are covered for any health issues that occur abroad. Enlighten Photography LLC cannot be responsible for any medical treatment, or cost associated with returning home.

Here are several review sites. We recommend starting with the following sites which contain highly-rated companies:
10 TopTen Reviews
Consumers Advocate
There are certain companies that continually, year after year, make the top-ten list (in alphabetical order):

Allianz Global Assistance
CSA Travel Protection
USI Travel Insurance Services
***In reviewing, make sure the company is a BBB Accredited business with an A+ rating. As of this update, all four companies above have the coveted A+ rating. Always get a quote and do not decide on price alone. Because selecting the right insurance for you can be confusing, we recommend speaking with an agent to understand the ins and outs of travel and/or travel medical insurance.

We encourage you to use all of the images you capture for your portfolio, website and social media. Any photographs shared on Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook must include “TAKEN AT WILD WITHIN US WORKSHOP” and tagged with "@wildwithinusworkshop".

It is our highest priority that everyone feels safe and supported throughout our time together. If you are unable to act in a mature and respectful way, we reserve the right to ask you to leave. There will zero tolerance for drug usage during the workshop.

What Camera Gear do you recommended:

Minimum of one DSLR or mirrorless Camera Body

Shooting and Processing agenda:

Here is a list of the specific destination locations that we plan on photographing (we will also pull over and photograph scenes along the way which have nice light and subject matter). Image post-production and instruction will occur each evening after our day of shooting, while waiting for the chance to photograph the Northern Lights during the dark hours of the night.

Snaelfessness peninsula:

‘The black church’
Gatlklettur Arch
Arnarstapi (fishing town)
Mt. Kirkjufell

Reynisfjara Beach

The diamond beach
Ice Cave

In November and December average lows are around 28 degrees Fahrenheit, and highs at approximately 39 degrees Fahrenheit.d Rain is a common occurrence in Iceland so we will want to be well prepared for such events in order to stay comfortable and protect our camera gear in the event that we are shooting in those sorts of conditions. Wind storms can exist on the island and we may need to prepare to be flexible in our shooting agenda and lodging itinerary.

Arriving in Iceland/Flights:

In order to account for the possibility of flight delays or luggage delays and a bonus of having time to recover from travel and time change, we are requiring everyone to fly in the day before the tour starts:

For the November 21st-28th, 2018 workshop: You will need to fly in on November 20, 2018.

For the December 4th-11th, 2018 workshop: You will need to fly in on December 3rd, 2018.

The airport to fly into is the Keflavik International Airport, KEF, also known as Rekjavik-Keflavik Airport. Most flights from the United States arrive in Reykjavik, Iceland between 6:15 AM and 6:45 AM. We recommend taking the day to explore Rekjavik.

We will be booking you a room at the “Airport Hotel - Aurora Star” for the night that you fly into Keflavik the day before the workshop begins. It is very convenient, located just across the street and offers a shuttle to and from the hotel. We will meet the next morning at this hotel, load into our vehicles and go straight from there.

For those who are considering spending additional time in Iceland outside of the workshop, we do recommend spending those days after the workshop. This will be helpful as after experiencing the workshop you will be familiar with which areas you liked the most and will give you opportunities to photograph those areas again.

During the workshop we will be doing a combination of eating out, and having family style meals which will be prepared by us. We are not world class chefs, but we will get the job done. For anyone desiring to participate in the cooking, you are more the welcome, but we do not expect or require this. As we are staying in vacation rental properties throughout the workshop, it will be most convenient to eat where we are staying. Many lunches that we eat can be pre-made for our day in the field. However, as with dinners we may eat out from time to time based on convenience. Both Kate and Seth will be taking care of this. For the times that we eat out, Iceland’s staples are lamb and fish. The more exotic foods include horse, shark and puffin. From our experience the lamb is quite wonderful! After we receive everyone's questionnaire, we will construct a meal plan and send that out to everyone.

During the workshop we will be staying in vacation rentals almost exclusively. These rentals can accommodate 5 or more individuals. Most lodging arrangements are for double occupancy for each rental, so you will likely have a roommate. For those needing single occupancy arrangements please contact us at:

Expect Arctic conditions. It is quite important that you bring a decent amount of synthetic clothing, it is very important to layer adequately. Some cotton is ok, but in the event that we receive rain you will definitely want synthetic layers. Cotton will stay wet and will make you cold. Synthetic clothing dries faster and keeps you relatively warm. Icelanders dress with 3 or 4 thin layers, starting with wool and ending with Gortex (or similar).

What is synthetic clothing? Fleece, nylon, polyester. Even though wool is not synthetic, it will keep you warm even while wet.

To get specific, here is what we recommend bringing:

Fleece pants or long johns
Outdoor hiking pants (not Jeans)
Synthetic rain pants (a light rain pant should be adequate)
One or two fleece tops
Rain jacket and rain pants
Eye protection (sunglasses)
Hiking boots (water proof is best), wool socks.
Hat and gloves, scarf and balaclava
T-shirts for underlayers
Spare gloves - spare shoes.
Micro-spikes (for walking on packed snow and icy sections)
Waterproof boot covers
